Helping Dropbox customers join shared folders with confidence and ease
On Dropbox mobile, we’d seen a downward trend of recipients joining folders. We knew from prior research that recipients didn't understand what was being asked of them or what they had access to.

I went through many design iterations and research, but in the end, my goal was to use simple copy and content design updates to improve the user experience. Bonus: these were improvements were also low cost to Engineering.
Adding the folder size made it clear to users how much space the folder will take up on their Dropbox if they join it.
The header Join to collaborate carries the weight of this interstitial screen and gives an impression of deeper engagement, like commenting and suggesting edits.
Updating the CTA from Add to Dropbox to Join folder aligned the language and the steps in the flow.
Letting the users preview the content further encouraged users to join.

My design partner and I went through many design iterations and research, but in the end, simple content updates won out as they were low cost to Engineering.
• I added the folder size to make it clear to users how much space the folder will take up on their Dropbox when they join
• I changed the header Join to collaborate to carry the weight of this interstitial screen and give an impression of deeper engagement, like commenting and suggesting edits
• I updated the CTA from Add to Dropbox to Join folder to align the language and the steps in the flow
• I added the Preview folder link to further encourage users to join -
Our quantitative results hit the mark. We saw:
• $450k annual yield upon GA
• 350% lift on joining (logged in users) and a 7x life on joining (logged out users)
• 140% lift on sign-in and sign ups
Not only did we see significant improvements in recipient joins, we also received qualitative feedback in usability testing that recipients:
• Understood what was in the folder
• Knew what they could do with the folder contents
• Understood how much space the shared folder would take up on their Dropbox account
